Meet Sara, my niece. Sara is a joyous, intelligent and respectful ten-year-old and the shining light in her mum Rosa’s life. Little Sara has a special gift – she can brighten anyone’s day with a single smile.

Sara used to bounce with energy every single minute of the day but earlier last year she started to lose her zest and soon became very ill indeed. That September she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

The news was a hammer blow to Rosa, a dedicated and hardworking single mother.

A minimum wage earner, Rosa struggled to make ends meet even before Sara’s diagnosis. Now she’s locked in an almost impossible battle to provide the medications and special diet that are Sara’s lifeline.

Sara and Rosa live in Medellin, Colombia where life for the disadvantaged is tough and unforgiving and there is no meaningful support for people in their dire circumstances. Rosa is in a fight for Sara’s life with no one in her corner.

Rosa works gruelling hours just to remain in that fight, with around three-quarters of her income consumed by the cost of Sara’s special needs. To make matters even worse those long working days mean Sara is often alone, adding greatly to Rosa’s burden of stress.

I’ve initiated this campaign in the hope those who are touched by Sara and Rosa’s story will respond with a little generosity and together make an enormous difference to their lives.

It really is upifting to note that this appeal has mustered more than 20 percent of the target figure while still only its sixth day, thanks to a group of generous and compassionate folk. Many thanks to the many who have provided for support for Sara and Rosa is such a short time.

Many thanks to the kind souls who have contributed in support of Sara so far. The appeal has been running for just three days but we’ve made fantastic progress. It truly is heartwarming to know there are so many people motivated to make a difference in other people’s lives.
